WalkDog FAQ
-
How does it work?
It works in a very simly: by means of a jaw tightened to the vertical saddle-holding pole. The aluminum bar containing the shock-absorbing mechanism is attached to the bike's frame. Then the cord is attached to the dog's collar by a snap link ...and you're ready to go! -
What kind of dog can use the WalkyDog®?
Practically any adult dog! As a matter of fact, it is very easy to adapt the cord length to the height of your dog, by simply adjusting the number of the internal springs that work as the shock-absorbing system. However, if it seems a little too technical, don't worry: an easy cord length-adapting table (referenced to widely known dog breeds) is printed on the product package. Simple, isn't it? It is important to go at your dog's pace for his exercise level and make sure he is not damaging the skin on his paws. -
Who can use the WalkyDog®?
Almost anybody, since absolutely no training is required for either the dog or the biker. Just use your common sense (sorry, we can't sell it along with our products!). The WalkyDog® should not be used by children younger than 15 years of age or with a body weight lighter than 80 pounds. Strict parental supervision of children using the WalkyDog® is strongly recommended. The WalkyDog® should not be used by riders carrying children on the bike. -
Does the product need any maintenance?
Not at all! -
Can the cord break or the snap link detach from the dog's collar?
Any product is, theoretically, subject to mechanical and/or material failure. Nevertheless, the WalkyDog® has been engineered and thoroughly tested in order to reduce this possibility as much as possible. -
What type of bicycle can I use the WalkyDog® on?
It is universal, meaning that you can install it on practically any kind of bike: mountain bikes, city bikes, men's bikes, women's bikes, new bikes, old bikes, small ones, big ones, etc... -
What do Veterinarians advise?
"A regular workout is ideal for keeping your dog fit," suggests Dr. Salvatore Mistretta, a veterinarian in Reggio Emilia, Italy, "and getting them to follow their person's bike may also be a chance for both to play and have fun together. By riding in the open air, the animal also has a chance to see people and other dogs, which is good from a behavioral standpoint."
Use of the WalkyDog® is suggested for adult dogs only, subject to a complete veterinary examination. Such an examination should make sure the animal doesn't suffer from any cardiovascular or musculo-skeletal problems.
Even for fit and healthy dogs, it is not advisable to force them to practice any sport activity during the hottest hours of the day (especially during the summertime) or after meals. The dog's behavior is important as well, notably with big dogs like Alaskan Malamutes. "The dog," says Dr. Mistretta, "should already be used to following their master on a leash without pulling, and they should be accustomed enough not to be distracted by their surroundings." Walking with your dog is a good way to start out, as it puts the least amount of stress on both your systems, especially if you're both just starting out. However once you've been walking with your dog for a month or so, his conditioning may improve to the point where he needs a bit more. Now is the time when the WalkyDog can be introduced. The WalkyDog gives your pet the maximum workout he can handle while improving your conditioning as well. -
How is it mounted on the bike?
GENERAL MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS
Assembly is very easy: it takes no more than five minutes.
1) After opening the packaging, separate the two parts of the fixing jaw (7 and 8) from the tubular bar (5);
2) Position the two parts of the fixing jaw on the saddle-holding pole, slightly tightening the screws (9). (Allow the jaw to stay in position but still free to be adjusted);
3) In case of non-standard seat post diameter (or simply to avoid scratches) wrap the rubber cuff (6) around the post before positioning the jaw. (we recommend that you *always* use the rubber cuff in order to preserve your paint)
4) Hook up the tubular bar (5), orienting it towards the back of the bike at an angle of about 20°.
5) Now,just tighten the screws firmly, and you are ready to go.
6) Make sure the quick-lock (11) is completely engaged.
ADJUSTMENT
The cord length can be adjusted by changing the number of springs in the internal shock-absorbing system. By reducing the number of springs, the cord becomes lengthened and the spring tension is reduced, thus adapting the WalkyDog® to small sized dogs. The internal spring system can be accessed by unscrewing the front bullet terminal (3) and removing the cord (2). Undo the spring holding knot on the cord's end and remove one or two springs; tie the knot on the end of the cord again before re-inserting the system inside the tubular bar.
