Teaching Your Dog to Wear the EZ Halter and Leash

First expand the two loops using the slider if necessary so that the loop farthest from the slider is a bit larger than your dogs muzzle and the one closest to the slider is a bit larger than your dog's head.

Hold both loops in one hand and a treat in the other. The "game" is for the dog to reach through the loops to get the goody.

Once your dog is eagerly shoving her nose through the loops to get the scrumptious treat, leave the smaller loop over your dogs nose and bring the other loop (the one with the tab slider) over her ears. Have a handful of treats and keep treating.

Now adjust the slider so that the halter fits loosely but will stay on. It might help to have a second person feed treats while you do this.

Keep praising and treating your dog with the head collar on for a couple of minutes. Prevent her from pawing it off. Remove when your dog is calm and take a break. This is a great way to feed your dog her dinner for the next couple of days!

Practice having her wear the EZ Halter on for 2-3 minutes and feeding tiny treats and then taking it off and ignoring her for a few minutes. Do this several times per day (meal times are great). Practice leading her around while you feed her treats.

For the first walk outside, put the Halter on, but continue using your original collar and leash so that there is no pressure on the halter. Feed lots of treats (bring a meal!) for calm behavior. On the next walk, begin to hold onto the Halter Leash for the last few minutes of your walk. Gradually extend the time you are holding onto the Halter Leash until you are able to use it exclusively and you no longer need the second leash and collar.

If your dog tries to paw or scratch the nose loop, ignore it while doing just enough to prevent her from scratching it off. Be sure to reward her a few seconds after she has stopped pawing. Usually this goes best if the process has been done slowly with lots of rewards for wearing the halter.

Fitting this collar and leash is fairly easy. Simply place the two loops over your dogs nose and then slip the loop with the slider over your dogs ears. Slide down so that the fit is snug but not too tight. The neck loop should lie just behind your dog's ears. Make sure your dog is able to open her mouth wide enough to pant or pick up a ball.
