Pup-Head Dog Potty Instructions and FAQ

Housetraining Your Dog Using the Pup-Head Portable Dog Potty

To train any dog young or old you must prevent accidents and give your dog plenty of opportunities for success.

Consistency and Prevention:

All dogs (especially puppies) must be taken outside immediately after waking up or napping, and every few hours in between. Dogs or puppies that are not housebroken need to be watched or contained. You can choose what works best for you, a crate, small pen or tether (a tether should be used only when you are supervising).

Watching Your Dog:

When you have the time to focus on your puppy and you are in the same room, you will observe some behavior that can tell you when they need to relieve themselves. They will be playing or entertaining themselves and suddenly they will stop what they aredoing and begin to sniff the floor. This is when you pick the puppy up, and tell them it’s “time to go potty!” Take them to the Pup-Head® and let them “smell the grass”. If they do not potty in a couple of minutes, return them to their confinement area for 15 minutes and then try again to bring them to the Pup-Head. Reward your dog when he potties on the Pup-Head.

Using Instinct:

Dogs urinate when they smell a scent that communicates to their brain. In return, the brain gives a signal to their bladder to release. There are exceptions to every rule except this one! The difference between a housebroken dog and one that is not, is the ability to override the impulse to release the bladder. How to Prepare Pup-Head™ to Appeal to Your Dog’s Brain and Bladder. If you want your dog to release in a specific area, then the fastest way to teach them is to duplicate the smell that has their brain communicate with their bladder. Pup-Head is treated with a special attractant. Your dog will want to cover the attractant with their own scent. It is “Marking their Territory”. If your dog does not respond to the scent, follow the steps outlined below and you will have your dog comfortably using Pup-Head in a short time.

  1. Follow your dog when they are sniffing for a place to go.

  2. Take a piece of paper towel and when your dog finishes urinating, blot some of the urine up on the paper towel and then apply it to the Pup-Head.

FAQ

How do I clean the Pup-Head?:
Remove any solid waste from grass. Remove Pup-Grass from grate and tray, empty any liquid material put grate back in tray and rinse thoroughly with water. We recommend using an enzyme product such as Anti-Icky-Poo. An alternative is to use a solution of ¼ cup of household bleach to 5 gallons of water. Soak mat for approximately 3 minutes and rinse with clear water. Hang mat to allow water to drain off quickly or place in dryer on air cycle for 20 minutes.

I have a male dog who lifts his leg, will he use the Pup-Head?
Most male dogs will still lift their leg and urinate into the air and onto the Pup-Head. If your dog misses the Pup-Head you may want to put a barrier around it.

How often do I clean it?
Everyone has different standards for cleaning so it is really a personal preference. We do recommend picking up solids so your dog does not step in their own waste and track it inside.

Is it easy to empty?
It is quite simple to empty providing you do not let the receptacle fill to the top with urine. Remove the grass and drainage grate and dispose of the urine outdoors or pour down a drain.

How do I keep the urine from spilling when I empty it?
There are several low costs ways of absorbing the urine so that you do not have spillage issues. We recommend using a small amount of kitty litter, (crystal not clay type) newspapers or paper towels. You can also use a washable (rinse able) Poochpad

Will the urine freeze in the winter?
Yes, urine will freeze, but it will not stick to the bottom of the tray.

How long will the grass last?
The synthetic grass has a lifetime warranty under normal use. The warranty does not cover damaged cause by harsh chemicals or damaged caused from excessive digging, clawing, or chewing.

After washing, will the scent disappear?
Yes, the attractant will eventually fade because you dog will cover the scent with their own. This is known as marking. The reason our attractant works so well is that dogs want to replace the scent up with their own.

Will my dog stop using it once the scent is washed away?
Not if he/she is used to using a Pup-Head ™.

Can I use it out doors even in cold weather?
Extreme weather conditions will not affect the Pup-Head™.

Customer Comment

Couldn't have asked for a smoother transaction. Now that I have the Pup-Head, I can leave for work in the mornings with the peace of mind that my floors and carpets are safe in case my little fuzzy one can't hold it. You've gained a fan and a repeat customer in the future. Thanks again! -Kelli S.

Pup-Head™ consistently, you can use a mild soap to clean the unit.
