Got a Hyper Dog?

These are dogs who have lots of energy and not a lot of self-control. Management using leashes and crates works to prevent him from practicing behavior you do not like. It is very important to teach your dog that everything he wants in life requires him to be *calm*. Plenty of calm exercise and brain work is also key. Avoid corrections and punishment as they can damage your relationship or cause your dog to become anxious. If you suspect that part of your dogs hyperactivity is due to anxiety, click here.

Exercise and Play

Make sure she gets at least 30 minutes of calm exercise per day (walking with sniff breaks is perfect). Chewing is a great outlet as well.

Training Aids

Spending time training will use up some of that brain energy which can be more tiring than running. Practice self-control type behaviors like "stay" as well as fun tricks.

Prevent: Using Crates or Gates

Make sure he doesn't learn that bouncing off of your guests is exciting or that digging in the carpets is cool. Neutral "time outs" for 5 min. can also help when mistakes happen. Make sure he gets plenty of rest as well. Keeping him nearby using a leash can also be useful.
