Allowing your dog to tug on a toy is great exercise as well as a reward for good behavior. Tugging on a toy is a safe and fun activity for your dog as long as it is done with a few rules. We suggest the following rules for playing tug with your dog:

Your dog is allowed to tug on the toy only after you have asked him to "tug".

Your dog must not put his teeth on you while he is tugging. If this happens, say "ouch!" and immediately stop playing with him and walk away and ignore him.

Your dog must drop the toy when you ask him. You can teach him to release the toy, by checking out our article on training your dog to "drop it".
